Take a sneak peek at the types of questions you'll be dealing with in our package.
Question for Deductive Reasoning
To be defined as arson, ALL of the following elements must be present:
- The willful and malicious burning or charring.
- Of property or structures.
- Without the consent of the owner.
According to this definition, the best example of arson is:
- Mia lights a campfire in her backyard without a permit and the fire accidentally spreads to her neighbor’s fence.
- Steve, in a fit of rage, sets fire to his own shed in his backyard.
- Casey breaks into his boss's office when he was away for a meeting and sets it on fire to destroy all documents.
- Morgan burns a pile of leaves on the street, but the fire spreads into nearby bushes.
Answer:
Option 1: Mia’s fire was accidental, so it doesn’t count as arson because it wasn’t done on purpose or with bad intent.
Option 2: Steve burned his own shed, so even though it was intentional and malicious, it’s not arson since he owns the property.
Option 3: Casey purposely set fire to his boss's office without permission. This matches all the parts of the arson definition, so it’s the best example.
Option 4: Morgan’s fire accidentally spread, so it doesn’t count as arson because it wasn’t intentional or malicious.
Question for Information Ordering
Rules:
Department vehicles can be serviced by internal resources such as the NY State Parking and Transportation Vehicle Maintenance Facility or by private maintenance facilities (at the discretion of the department). The department must keep a vehicle maintenance log on all state vehicles. At minimum, the department’s log should include all of the following information, logged in the following order:
- Date of service
- Vehicle odometer reading at time of service
- Description of service
- Company providing service
- Cost of the service
- An invoice number
- Any other relevant information to fully document the maintenance service provided.
- Approving officer and rank
Question:
Officer Voss takes his cruiser into a private facility to have its oil changed and fluids checked. The Vehicle Maintenance Facility is backlogged for two weeks, so he receives permission from the Station Chief to have it serviced at a private facility. The Station Chief informs him a requisition form for service, telling Voss to add it to the service log. Voss fills out the form, including the date he took it in for service, the mileage displayed on the odometer, a description of the oil change and fluids check, the name of the company, and the cost billed to the department. He includes the receipt and the requisition form in the file.
What steps were not completed or completed out of order, according to the logging instructions:
- Steps 3 and 5
- Steps 5 and 6
- Steps 6 and 8
- Steps 7 and 8
Answer:
The process was not completed correctly, as the officer logged the date, vehicle mileage, a description of services rendered, the company name, and the cost of the service, but he did not log the invoice number. He did not log the approving officer or their rank on the form. He included the requisition form and receipt with the forms when he filed them. The correct answer is option 3 (Steps 6 and 8).
Question for Problem Sensitivity
Problem:
Wildfires can pose an inherent threat to life and property in heavily forested areas, especially those bordering Bureau of Land Management lands. The causes of wildfires in NY State can be attributed to the following causes:
- Lightning – 5%
- Humans – 95%
- Burning debris and detritus – 33%
- Smoking, equipment, railroads, and miscellaneous causes – 30%
- Incendiary fires – 16%
- Campfires – 16%
- Children – 5%
Question: What orders can the Forestry Department of NY State issue at minimal cost/effort to the state in order to minimize the number of wildfires and forest fires that occur?
- Installation of lightning rods throughout the state parks
- Mandatory education programs issued to all campers/visitors who stay in state parks
- Smoking prevention and fire prevention ad campaigns on billboards, radio, and TV
- Declaring burn bans throughout the driest times of the year
Answer:
Since the question asks for fire prevention techniques that would be of minimal cost/effort to the state, the logical choice is declaring burn bans during certain times of the year. Installation of lightning rods throughout the state parks would be prohibitively expensive, mandatory education programs would provide a great burden in time and resources to the parks department. Smoking and fire prevention campaign ads on billboards, radio, and TV would also be incredibly expensive for the state, so option 4 is the least resource intensive.
